| both are necessary for breaking in an engine, which is why the "run it balls to the wall" approach from initial startup is a terrible idea. Annealing should be done before excessive loads (high boost, extended high temp runs) are put on the engine - the whole point of heat cycling the engine. While i agree that annealing can be done at any time, i would argue that it is important to do early, esp before subjecting the engine to excessive stress. This really has nothing to do with my original question, which is how to get the accessories burped without extended idling
